Community Involvement

It doesn’t happen without you! Community Involvement includes public involvement in various community programs and projects. recognition of volunteers, and support toward community initiatives by the municipal, business, and private sector. Recognized as such a major component of the overall program, it has become a key sector to be included in each of the sections, and still retains a specific criteria award.

2007: Town of Souris, Manitoba

Unquestionably, residents value their town and are working together to enhance the quality of life. All sectors in varying degrees, contribute to the community involvement. The Council gives financial support for volunteer activities, provides information and educational programs, assists in promoting local events and has innovative ways to involve youth and seniors with an aim to have a broad social inclusion. It is interesting to note the number of past mayors and councillors who, in previous years, carried out civic responsibilities are now very involved in ways to better the community.

Thank you and keep up the fine work!

2006: Town of Treherne, Manitoba

Treherne is to be commended for their community involvement in all aspects of their community. The special project for 2006 was fundraising and volunteer labour to build a state-of-the-art swimming pool including a jacuzzi tub and swimming lanes for training and competitions. Estimated at over $1 million, the majority of the project was financed through fundraising with a significant amount of work done by volunteers.

Previous fundraising and volunteer labour projects have included a new daycare/resource centre and a prestigous golf club house and course.

Community involvement initiatives are numerous in Treherne :

  • Community auction every second year;
  • Maintenance of the cemetaries by a combination of voluteers and hired personnel.
  • Treherne Museum, presided by a volunteer board.   The majority of the collection, including the buildings that house the museum, were donations by Treherne past and present citizens.
  • 4-H annual highway clean-up.
  • Weekly garbage collection by the Kinsmen Group
  • High school students volunteer to clean up public properties and senior citizens yards twice a year including stone picking, window washing, weeding, etc.

And the list goes on, making Treherne a true inspiration for civic and community pride.
